I'm curious what kinds of alternative medicine, old wives tales, folk remedies, or just plain "this makes me feel good when I have...." ideas you all use. I'm fighting some bad headaches that ibuprofin doesn't make a dent in and Tylenol3 (acetaminaphin with coedine) makes me feel worse before I feel better and then doesn't last. So I got wondering about other methods you all might be using to help your body feel better.

Chicken soup? Hot bath?
Any good ideas out there?

Title: The People of Sparks
Author: Jeanne DuPrau
Genre: Adolescent Fiction
Pages: about 200

This is the 2nd book in the Ember series. I needed a light read this past week and this fit the bill. The City of Ember dies in the in first book and some of the people find their way out. Ember was underground and we learn in this 2nd book, that it was underground because the founders feared that humanity might be annihilated...and it nearly was. All that are left are small villages of people who don't have very much. So when the 400 people from Ember arrive in a village with just 300 people, it's a bit disconcerting.

The story is about how they learn to live together despite their differences and the fact that the Emberites came with almost nothing and the people of Sparks must share everything with them as well as teach them how to survive on their own. At least that is the initial plan. But things change as time goes on. Relations deteroriate to the point of near warfare between the two groups but in the end they realize they are stronger together.

This is a fantastic book for both boys and girls. It is well-suited for a younger reader who is into chapter books. It would be especially helpful to a child who was "warring" with siblings, because the main characters learn how to circumvent "war" by doing good deeds. A discussion on that element of the story could be valuable to children. A discussion on "not judging" based on appearances could also come from the book. Also, the problems with telling lies and how lies can become bigger than you think might be interesting. All-in-all, an excellent story with much to learn from.

You do need to read the first book to really get some of the things in the 2nd book. :)

I watched the movie Radio last week. It was VERY good!

The movie is about a developmentally disabled man in the 1970s who is "taken in" by the local high school football coach. The coach makes him a part of the team by letting him hand out towels and water to the players and soon the whole school has taken him in by letting him be the hall monitor (who says "no running!" but then gives you a hug because he didn't mean to yell at you) and be the morning announcer of the lunch menu.

It is a heartwarming story based on a true story. They have actual pictures of "Radio", a name he is given because he likes radios so much, today where he still is an assistant coach on the high school team. This is a fantastic family film; my kids liked it as well as I did.

One funny thing...my 11yo dd asked where they found an actor who was disabled, but could still do the lines of the movie so well? I had to chuckle when I told her the actor was Cuba Gooding Jr. who has been in a lot of movies and isn't disabled at all...he's ACTING. He is excellent as Radio. The coach is played by Ed Harris who is always excellent.

This is a topic I hear a lot about but didn't know very much until I read a student's paper about it. I hope it helps you too. :)

"Tort law is the means by which individuals seek financial compensation for injuries caused by the actions of others. In the healthcare context, these civil lawsuits are generally known as medical malpractice actions and occur when a patient is injured due to the negligence of a healthcare provider."

So when policy makers talk about tort reform, they're talking about reforming the way courts handle civil suits against others where the suit is asking for damages (usually financial) of some kind. My student's paper goes into a great deal of detail (which is very good for her grade) and covers the main ideas that research is showing mixed results in the need for actual reform including the data not having enough depth to really analyze and that most studies that are done can not be generalized to the healthcare system as a whole. This essentially means that policy makers who cry "foul" are doing so out of more emotion than facts. Many are citing newspaper reports rather than actual court cases/transcripts and so an incomplete and often biased picture is formed.

"Only one-eighth to one-tenth of negligently injured parties choose to bring suit, and of those, only one-third receive compensation for their injuries (Marchev 2002). Nearly 96% of claims filed are settled out of court, are dropped or dismissed, or are heard by a judge sitting without a jury (Laska and Forrest 2004)."

While YES there are doctors who are put out of business because of a lack of tort reform (and likely some actual negligence on their part as well), it is not as widespread as is claimed. And YES malpractice insurance is terrifically expensive, but it also often does the job that needs to be done as many doctors are not put out of business and most cases are settled out of court.

The real truth is that "The tort system is not a highly effective means for providing compensation to victims of negligence. Only 22% of total system costs go to compensation (Hellinger and Encinosa 2009), whereas almost 30% go to administrative costs, and another 30% go to legal defense costs (Towers Perrin 2004). "

Interesting, huh?

Ok, I SOOOO need to update my food storage room and get ready for case lot sales in a few weeks. I've tried several different ways to do this and none have been successul over the long haul because they require such consistent upkeep from me. I THINK there is 3 months of stuff done there, with a year of some stuff, but I don't know for sure. Who has a good plan that has worked for your family? How do you keep up with it? What's your rotate vs. consume policy? What do you keep in LONG term stuff and why?

My FIL is a big fan of food storage so he kindly shows up with boxes of stuff that we don't eat. I've tried to tell him that's pointless, but he insists that just having the stuff is the important factor and we should NOT eat what he brings. He doesn't seem to get the "we don't eat it thus we won't eat it" concept. I don't like storing stuff I don't eat, but I do out of family peace. Anyone else have a meddling family member sure that their plan is the only good plan? How do you handle it?

So...do your kids like piano practice? How do you encourage them to do this? When they become a bit more advanced, what do you recommend a parent do to continue encouraging?

I have a very hands-off approach which has always worked pretty well. But now my daughter is more advanced than I ever was and while she is practicing more because she likes it, I'm wondering if I need to do more for her to build her skill and love for it. What do you think?

Hubby and oldest son are leaving town for five days and I'm already feeling stressed about being home with the younger kids all week BECAUSE they are major high energy and I'm wanting things to stay calm around here this week. What are some ideas I can suggest to them to keep them busy that won't create more work for me in the end? More specifically - I'm concerned about finding time to do some things that really need to be done that will make a huge difference in the way I feel inside if I get them done - like getting the house relatively clean, paying bills, going grocery shopping, doing my laundry (that hasn't been done for about 10 days), and getting ready for another long family vacation in August.

I haven't felt this way for a long time, but I think that after a teenager, a couple kids in the tween stages, having a child in kindergarten this last year, watching another child who was also in Kindergarten, having a four year old (who was in preschool that I taught every six weeks) and a two year old at home who constantly need me, being called as Primary President, having my husband working at home all the time, still being in limbo with my basement, and having a very fun filled but crazy summer, I think I'm just finally wanting some "Diva" space. I know I can hold it together this week if I can just look forward to some peace and quiet in my home and this week I'm needing to create that peace. Am I making any sense? (At this point it might be possible that I'm letting off a little pressure now more than anything seeing as my thoughts are all over the place. Kind of sounds like my life has been spinning out of control and it has finally caught up with me.)

I guess I just need some friendly encouragement to keep doing what we all are doing since my life really isn't that much different than everyone else's! Thanks for listening.

I gave you the link to the 3rd article in the series because it has links to the other 2 parts of the series. If you look at the articles, you'll see they quote extensively from the book. I was intrigued by the stuff that the author of the articles has mentioned so far and I think I'll buy the book. But it sounded so interesting, especially to those of us working to educate children in our own homes, that I wondered if we will want to start a discussion group on it and all read it at the same time. Look over the articles let me know if you're interested. :)
