Default Dishwasher Soap

We have a dishwasher that doesn't wash the dishes very well - it's more of a sanitizer - so we have to hand wash our dishes w/o using the dish soap before putting them in our dishwasher. I was talking to a friend the other day who said she didn't think clean dishes had to do w/ the dishwasher but that it had to do w/ the soap. I thought her point was worth considering and so I wanted to know if any of you have found this to be true. Do any of you use a dishwasher detergent that is better than the other brands? I'm just curious. It would be great if our dishes could go from the table right into the dishwasher rather than having to sit in the sink waiting for someone (me) to come along to wash them.

Our old dishwasher never got the dishes clean, no matter what soap I used. They always came out gritty. Our new dishwasher is great, though, and everything comes out clean- the new ones are designed with a disposer in the bottom, too, so you don't have to rinse the dishes clean before putting them in! My Dh had to keep reminding me for a long time not to rinse the dishes. Now if someone is here and I'm loading the dishes, they ask, "You don't have to rinse them???" Nope! They are doing great things with appliances these days.

Thanks BW, I agree with your sumation. If the machine is crap, you get crap, if it's good, you get clean dishes with minimal effort.

Now we just need to go see your DH and get us a new one -- well, net just yet, since we might need to test ... we'll you know what I'm getting at.

We have an older dishwasher, too. I HAVE noticed that some detergents work better than others. My favorite costs more, but works a lot better. (For the record, I'm a cheapo who likes to spend as little money as possible on anything.) That said, it's worth it to me to pay more for Electrosol pellets. I also find that when I use the pellets, I don't waste detergent by overfilling or spilling. I also started using Jet Dry & it has helped our plastics (Rubbermaid-type) actually come out dry! Sooooo nice.

I actually decided to experiment w/ soap and I used the Cascade packets w/ Dawn in them and it worked great. I was totally surprised. I'll have to use the Electrosol pellets next time and see what I think. I don't need Jet Dry because we have a water softener, but I'm sure they sell it w/o the Jet Dry.

Thanks!
