I am running the 5k. I am doing my "getting fit" and weight loss through aerobics and then I will run (slowly walk at a fast pace.. ha ha) twice a week for conditioningl Hopefully I will be ready. I heard that we can go together to train. But I am not 100% sure.

Are you talking about the 4th of July? AP, you will be very surprised how FAST you start running after doing the walking thing. Last year when I started walking on our treadmill, after about 3 weeks, I was running the entire time. It was GREAT! I might just have to join you crazy wimmins and run this 5k too.

BS, I hope you do. I need all the peer pressure I can get on this thing. AP, on what days are you doing running/aerobics? I'd be interested in coordinating my days w/ you.

well I was told that Mon, Wed & Fri are the only days to go. So I am just going to all of them. It starts at 9 am and you can leave whenever you want. I really enjoyed it. There is loud music and the instructor has a microphone. It felt great after I left. Let me know what you think

I don't know what the donation is for. I'll ask my neighbor, maybe she'd know. How far are you walking/running? I thought I'd start out w/ conquering a mile. Is that too much or too little? What do you think?

Ok, anyone who can help me. In gym class when it was time to run I hid behind the vending machines. I tried it in my early twenties and had horrible shin splints even after a lot of stretching. I really want to change my attitude about running. Any thoughts or suggestions? Also if I do not have a tread mill how do I prepare for a POSSIBLE 5k?

The question is, did you get away with hiding behind the vending machines? When I was in high school I used to get shin splints because of gymnastics. They just told us to tough it out and take it easy. They eventually went away. As for the running w/out a treadmill, obviously you'll have to do it outside. Are you only able to go at night or can you go in the morning?

Hey Bates! How's it going? Thanks for dropping by. I hope you don't mind if I get mushy on you but we've sure missed seeing you around here. Hey everyone, this is another family friend, more Jonathan's than mine but I think he'll claim me as well. Which 5K's did you run last year? How did you train and what's the hardest part about it? I have to start out my training slowly but once I get going I'm a freight train. I hope you do come run w/ us. Big Sissy will probably stay home and watch the kids (yes, that's a challenge). Does your wife to be run events?

Of course I will claim you. Last year I ran the murray fun days 5k on July 4th and then on 9/9 I ran a 9/11 memorial one at wheeler farm. To train I was was running 2.5 miles 2 to 3 times a week. The distances and frequency is what I have been doing for 2 years now so I didn't do any training to work up to it. I did do a couple runs that were over 3 miles just to make sure I knew I could do it. I am currently playing basketball twice a week to stay in shape as I have wussed out and quit running in the freezing weather. I have been going to the gym occasionally and when I do I will run for 30 minutes on a speed of 6 and that gets me to 3 miles in the half hour. Hardest part....trying to stay on pace. I get the race mentality and at times run outside my pace. I also think that knowing the course would be nice. The whole time I was running at wheeler I was not sure when it would end until the last 200 yards or so. This was my own fault as I later found a map of the course. Now my goal is to beat my times. I definitely think you guys could do one. Even if you had to walk for part of it. Who cares. Just go out and have fun. Set a goal to run 1 or 2 this year and let me know and I will run them with you. As for training goes I say go to a place like a school where you can accurately measure distance and start running a 1/2 mile then a mile then 1.5 and 2 etc. You could do it like weights and alternate your runs. So run a hard day then a easy day then a hard day. So on hard day start by running a mile and on easy day run 1/2 or something like that. I am sure if you search the web you will find tons of info on how to train for a 5k. All in all I had a blast running them. The murray one I ran with a guy in the ward so that was cool and the 9/11 one I just ran by myself. I think it would be a lot of fun with friends. Plus you get a t-shirt!!!! Wife to be wants to but she is having some knee problems. We hope to get her back to that point though as I would love to go running with her!

Okay, I have kind of a stupid question. Is your avatar a transformer? Just wondering. That's what it looks like to me. What is it w/ you boys and your Cracker Jack toys? The t-shirt is the last thing I'm thinking about. Big Sissy is the same way. He's got like a million of them. I'm not sure if I'll ever understand that one. ;D Anywho, this is some really good advice! I feel like I could actually go and successfully run a 5K - with training of course. I know that sounds cheesy but it's quite a lofty goal for me and a bit overwhelming so thanks for putting it into perspective for me.

BS is the t-shirt king. Good luck D5. I haven't been able to run most of my adult life so I do nto have any words of wisdom except to start out slow and build yourself up like Bates said. I am just impressed is all I have to say.

Check out Coolrunning.com for a training program called "The Couch to 5K running plan." That's basically how I trained for my first 5K two years ago. This plan has you running 3 miles by the end of 9 weeks. Running/walking 3 times a week, starting out with 1 mile at a time was how I started. Gradually I was able to increase my running time over my walking time and gradually increased the total distance-- and by 9 weeks I was able to run 3 miles! I'd love to run the 5K on the 4th if we are in town. Our Family Reunion dates aren't set yet, so I'll have to wait to decide.
