This is for all those working towards a 5K Run Goal. Before Saturday, get in your car and measure and map out a 5K circle that ends back at your house. That’s 3.1 miles. Envision yourself jogging that route. Set a time on Saturday that allows yourself an hour window of time, so you don’t feel pressure. Then Saturday morning get out there and run---walk---run---walk----walk---walk (as much as you need to)your route back to your home. This can psychologically prepare you to FEEL how far the distance is…..and is motivating too, in that it does help to know that you can at least walk the distance. And for anyone who lives in my neighborhood, this Saturday I will be out running early on a long run, so if anyone wants to, I can run by your house and pick you up and we can do this run/walk 5K challenge together. Let me know if any of you are interested, and what time you’d like to go out, and I will swing by your house. We’ll Run/Walk/Walk/Run/Walk/Walk whatever pace you need to go, well as long as it’s slow, I can’t go fast….and make it through together. Is anyone interested???

Well, I'm not in your neighborhood, but I'll take the challenge. I'm working 1.66 miles this week, but the treadmill just isn't nearly as fun as jogging on the beach in Hawaii How long is your long run?

I think I would like to do this challenge. I'm supposed to be running 2.25 miles on Friday w/out walking and I was wondering if I can do that to keep up w/ my training and then do the 5K on Saturday as well? I don't have a problem doing both - just wondering if you know of a reason that wouldn't be good.

I measured out the distance in my car, so I'll know how far to go. I'm buying new running shoes tomorrow though...do I have to worry about breaking them in or anything? I tried to get them today, but ran out of time and I wanted to take the time to have tried what needed to be tried to make sure I had the correct pair. The place I went to here did a video analysis, so I'm feeling like I had some good advice in the store, I just didn't have time to try on the pair they recommended for my aching shin splints. I will though! To me, it seems like an impossibility to run 16 miles...maybe someday, but for now, I'll keep aiming at the 5k.

ER, I'm excited for you to get your new shoes!!! It is not recommended to buy a new pair of running shoes and go out and race the next day, but if you're having an expert help you get fitted with the right running shoe for your feet and the way that you run, I don't think that you'll have too much trouble breaking them in. For me, it does take a week or so to get used to the feel of the new shoe. I went to Yahoo Answers and asked How to break in new shoes, if you want to read other people's thoughts on it. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] When I first started training for my first 5K two years ago, I was running in aerobic shoes. My first pair of running shoes, were a pair off a clearance rack at Sears, and killed my feet the first week of running in them, I think my feet just weren't used to a running shoe style. After I got used to them, I could really tell the difference----a lot more support and protection for my body than the aerobic shoe. My second pair of running shoes again was just a pair off a sales rack, nothing specially fitted, but that time I was able to run right away with no problems. I just got a new pair this week, this time having an "expert" analyze my feet and running style and all that, and helped me get a pair fitted to me. I wore them around the house a couple of days to just get used to the feel, because they do have quite a different feel to them compared to the others. I went out running yesterday for 6 miles and had no trouble....no pain, no blisters or anything. Anyway, Good luck with your new shoes!! Good luck with your run tomorrow too!!!

Thanks ML! My lower legs are killing me though. I don't think I should try to run the 5k tomorrow especially not in new shoes and definitely not in the shoes that are making my legs hurt in the first place. I'm really struggling with motivation since my legs are hurting so much and I still don't have a clue what everyone is talking about with the "zone" concept. The shoes I did try on did feel REALLY good though. They had me run in a couple of pairs to get the feel and the difference was quite amazing, but since I was still hurting in my shins they suggested that I should try a softer shoe even, but I didn't have time at that time. Today...I just want to go back to bed. Does ibuprofin work on shin splints?

I'm so sorry that your legs are hurting so much!! Resting for a few days sounds like a good idea. I hope you feel better soon. I'll bet that your new shoes will be a tremendous help in preventing future shin splints.

I'm interested in this "video analysis" that you had done, Erudite. Where did you go, if you don't mind me asking? I have always had a problem finding properly-fitted shoes, no matter where I'm shopping (from Footlocker to Shopko). And there is always an incredibly painful wear-in process for me, too. I have a need for wide-width shoes. Does anybody know a good place (or brand) to look at, for this?

I jogged my 2.25 today just in case tomorrow doesn't work out. I am wondering when you're thinking about going. I have a lot going on. My parents will be here tomorrow to take my kids up to their house for the week!!!!! I'm still tying up some loose ends to get them gone. Okay, maybe it's more like we're still in the process of gathering all the ropes together. Anyway, it depends on what time. I didn't figure out the distance for three miles because I assumed you knew, do I need to figure that out before tomorrow? If so, we may just want to bag this until next week when my kids are gone and I can really get away w/ no strings attached.

Congratulations on your run today 5D. That's awesome! Thanks for the sleeping bags and air mattress. We are all set now!! Thank you Thank you!! A whole week!! Wow, sounds great. I'll be out and about around 6:30. Sounds like you have a lot going on tomorrow to get the kids ready---if you want to wait until next week that's fine. Let me know when your ready.

You're welcome, you're welcome!! I'm sorry I only brought them by today. Our van is broken and so I've kind of lost track of time. I kept thinking today was Thursday. I'm not sure why the van would affect it other than my life feels a little on hold right now. I will try to run w/ you at 6:30 in the morning - that way I'm up and around. I'm wondering what you wear to go running outside. I wear some running shorts and a t-shirt but I don't know if I want to wear that outside tomorrow. I have jersey shorts - is that too loose? I can't believe I'm doing this. I feel like I'm doing the polar bear swim or something, that's how adventurous this is for me.

Yes, thank you. One of my goals that I set out to accomplish and now I've done it. Thanks for your help. I can't wait to start really training for my 5K. Erudite, I don't know much about this but are your shins still hurting you? I'm wondering if you could have stress fractures since they keep hurting so bad. Please get running shoes.
