I WAS SO FOOLISH the other day. After running the 1/2 marathon, my right thigh was still hurting a week later. My good friend from Michigan came out here for a wedding and called me up to go running together. (We always ran together in Michigan) Well the old PRIDE got in the way----I couldn't let her see that I was a wimp and couldn't run just because of a little ache in my leg.....so I went running with her. We planned on a 6 mile run. My leg was hurting the entire time, but my mind kept ignoring the pain and we were talking and laughing which kept my mind off of the pain. The last 2 miles of the run I had to slow way down because by this time I was in extreme pain.....Well at the end of the run, I got in the car to drive an hour back home----When I got home, I could NOT walk. I had to call my DH on the cell phone from our driveway to come and carry me into the house. That was two weeks ago and my leg still hurts to walk! I don't know if I'm making it worse to keep walking on it, or if it's better to keep walking on it. It kills me to climb up a step or go down a step. I don't think it would do any good to go to the doctor's as nothing can be broken from running on a sore leg, so I don't think a doctor could do anything---ANYWAY I guess a marathon this summer is ruled out.....guess I was meant to be doing something else besides running this summer! If anyone has any advice on what to eat or what to do to help mend an injury like this, I'd love to hear it. Thanks---

First off, I am really sorry to hear that you are having pain and that for now the marathon is shelved. Now can you tell me more about your injury? Where does it hurt? Are we talking thigh or calf? The thing that keep coming to my mind is stress fracture -- So yes, a doctor could help. I really hope it's not, and I'm sorry to say this ML, but you really should go see the doctor just to make sure something isn't broken. You ARE worth the co-pay (assuming you have insurance) just to rule out anything serious. Also, break out your FBAND book and look up the area of pain and see what it says. You don't need to tell us what it says, but check to see if what it has to say applies -- though, I can tell you I never like what it says, but only because it's usually pretty spot on. But again, before I could offer any uneducated advise, I need more information on the specifics of the pain/injury. Although, I will say that was nice of you to let you DH take care of you. I'm sure you boosted his confidence when he got to carry you in the house -- we men sometimes love to be the "Man" on occasion.

I am sorry you are hurting. If I were you, I would go to the doctor. Don't try and tough it out. There may be something the doctor can do to help you. While training for two of my marathons, my knee would hurt. Both times it was painful and difficult to walk, nothing was broken, though. The first time, I went to an orthopedic surgeon. His main focus was surgery. He did help me get better without surgery, though. The second time I had knee pain, I decided to go to a Sports Medicine doctor. I loved it! Well, I guess I loved it as much as you can while going to the doctor! I loved that he is physically active, and so are his patients. So he knew that I wanted to get better as fast as I could so I could get back to running. He was able to figure out that my kneecaps are looser than normal, so if I don't keep my hamstrings and quads balanced, my kneecaps move out of place and rub my bones. He gave me several things to try (stretches, a foam insert to put under one of my arches, etc) and had me come back a couple of times to make sure I was doing well. So, considering your injury happened while running, I would highly recommend going to a Sports Medicine doctor. Maybe he will be able to get you back on the road quickly!

Thanks for your thoughts BS and RAR. The pain is in my right thigh very high up in the front center. I guess I'm a bit lazy when it comes to making myself go to the Doctor....I don't like to take time out of life to bother with it----especially when then all they'll tell me is to take some ibuprofin and take it easy for a few weeks....I can tell myself to do that. But seeing how BS gave me a first opinion and now RAR seconds the opinion....guess I better get myself in to see one. I hadn't thought of going to a Sports Medicine Doctor. What a good idea! How did you find one RAR? Do you still have the info. on the one you went to? Thanks for caring you guys.

I called my insurance company and had them refer me to a sports medicine doctor. Then I knew for sure that he was covered. My doctor's name is Russ Toronto. He has an office close to LDS hospital and one at the south end of the Salt Lake valley.
