I'm gearing up to run a marathon this summer. I came across this great quote that went along with a training program I found online. The quote is from General George S. Patton: "Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired!"

WOW! I'm gonna put that up in my house! Thanks for sharing. Good luck w/ your marathon - when is it? Which one are you running and how and when are you training for it?

Sheesh, a Marathon! That's for people that listen to their mind. Guess I better not do one. Seriously though, that's awesome. Good luck and great Quote.

I love that! Very motivating. I noticed myself repeating it today. I even told my husband on the phone when he asked how I was doing today. I said "I'm good.. just putting mind over body today"

The Ogden Marathon on May 19th. I'm following a 20 week training program from MarathonRookie.com. Basically the training runs are 4 days a week, using Saturday for your long run....increasing little by little each week. Right now, I really don't knowif my body can make it that far, but this is my goal---I'm trying to focus on the 'mind over body' deal ---and just concentrating on how much I need to run this week. I'll worry about next week when it comes. :-*

That's awesome! It's people like you who tell me their experiences that get the wheels turning in my head. I really appreciate the motivation you indirectly offer me by just letting me know what you're working on and how you're doing it and how it's going for you!! I'm slowly getting there. I have somethings that I've got to get in order before I can start my 5K training but it'll happen. Hopefully here in a couple of weeks. Amber, so you're running a couple of times a week and then doing aerobics about three times a week? Is that right?

That was my intention ;D ;D ;D But seriously yes I have started all that. My kids are sick.. My daughter was in instacare for a urinary tract infection a couple nights ago so I haven't had much mental energy to push myself out the door. I will shoot for monday since I have a family party tonight and church tomorrow. Wish me luck! I would love to do that marathon.. Maybe one day!

When you have babies at home to take care of, their needs become top priority in your life, because they cannot take care of themselves--- and so it's difficult to get out to exercise as often as you'd like to. It might be good to consider setting a smaller exercise goal, so to speak, especially at this time in your lives with little ones to take of-----instead of setting the goal of getting out to exercise 3 times a week, think about first setting the goal of getting out to exercise at least once a week. Even getting out to exercise once a week can be tricky, but a lot easier to tackle than fitting 3 times a week into the Motherhood Juggle Mix. When you do exercise once a week, pat yourself on the back and feel good about yourself for reaching your goal!! When you are able to accomplish exercising once a week for a while, then maybe try and sneak another day in, and so on... Just some thoughts!!

In all actuality (is that a word) the main reason I'm pushing myself to try and do this marathon is because I've always lacked discipline----SOOOO many times in my life I've started projects, started college etc....but for whatever reason....often due to lack of confidence in myself....I've quit. When I ran the 10K in December it gave me such a boost....this deep feeling of accomplishment and feeling that hey if I put my mind to it, I really can do anything. I've just got to make myself do this. Week 3 of training for this marathon---so far I'm track! :-* huffing and puffing and SLOWLY running, but I'm running, slower than some people walk, but Hey that's ok. I'm happy.

You know, this running stuff is addictive. It's all I've been thinking about since Monday night. How can I improve my form, how can I eat better, how can I, how can I..... I'd have to say I'm running a 5K for the exact same reasons. Simply to prove to myself that I can start and finish something all in one cycle. I only ran one day for 20 minutes but already I feel more in control of my thoughts than I've felt in a long time. It's awesome! I was telling BS tonight that I can see why people go on to run marathons. I think about the 5K and it doesn't seem like that big of a deal anymore. It really feels obtainable to me - which it never really has - I have the mass support to thank for that! So now I know it's not going to be my only event. Not to say that I'm thinking of anything else at the moment, I just know this isn't my last brush w/ training for an event. I couldn't have even come this far w/out you guys. I've never seen myself actually crossing the finish line and I can actually envision that in my mind. I'm so ready for this change in my life!

I’ve been a bit discouraged as I’ve fell behind on my running schedule. I had a couple of weeks where I didn’t run because of sickness in the house, strep throat, then the stomach flu….So this week getting back out running has been so hard. I've gone backwards in my progress. Can I get back on track? Have I set my goal too high to run in this marathon in May? Maybe I should aim for doing a half marathon in April or May, and push my goal for doing a marathon to the one in September. Is that so bad to give myself extended time to reach a goal??? Or do I kill myself at all costs to reach it now!?

I agree, killing yourself to make it happen might ruin the joy of running. And I don't think you want to do that. Just start where you are, and reset your goal to get it done in Sept.

Hey thanks!! I feel all REMOTIVATED now that I know y'all aren't going to FORCE me (ha ha I tried to pick up the pace a few days ago....my pride was kicking in and I was thinking about how idiotic I must look when I run because I barely lift my feet off the ground....80 year old women are passing me walking with canes as I'm running along! ANYWAY, I pooped out halfway through and had to walk home.....I'm putting the pride back away and I'm back to slow and steady--- And yesterday I reached my goal for the day....

Good to hear. Get some good shoes and a Remotivation ticket and you should be good to go. Don't forget the socks too
