Default Okay, Diva, here I go

I told Diva I might want to train for a 5K this summer- I have two sons who are committed to doing it if I do, so I'm doing it. I've never liked running before, but maybe this is the year I'll change my mind. I went to coolrunning.com as Diva recommended and printed out the schedule for the "from the couch to 5K" training plan. I'm going to try to do it. I really am.

Today is the first day. I may come here to report on my progress. If anyone else wants to train and run it with us, you can post your progress here as well. Brace yourselves, I tend to whine A LOT when I do something I don't enjoy. Like camping I'll try not to be too big a baby here, but I might need to vent. Then again, maybe I'll just enjoy it totally and have to eat some crow for all the years of refusing to run because it isn't my fav.

For one thing I hate sweating, but I'm coming around on that. For another, my knees and ankles sometimes bother me- but hopefully lots of exercise will determine whether that's an actual physical problem or just my body complaining that I'm out of shape

So... join us! If you want to run the July 4 5K in Tooele, let's start training now and enjoy the health benefits for 7 months before the run.

Oh, and please don't point and laugh if you see me stumbling around the neighborhood, limping or walking instead of running. I'm very out of shape, so it'll take me a while to actually be able to really run any distance... no mockery, please

I gotta run.

Okay, you ladies who run in winter- how the heck do you do it??? My lungs feel like an elephant- a frozen elephant is sitting on them. It's better now, but my throat and chest are still a little achy from the cold. I went out when the sun was out, but of course it quickly hid behind the clouds- and it was miserable! I don't mind my face feeling like it's melting as it thaws, I can handle my legs and arms being cold until I warm up, but it's the lungs!!! Seriously, does that pain ever go away or do you just suffer all winter?

I think I need a treadmill if I'm really going to do this... too bad I can't just rent or borrow one for a few months and decide if I like it enough to buy one.

Congratulations! I am proud of you! To be honest, I don't always love running. It is WORK! But I really love how it makes me feel, and there are plenty of times that I enjoy it. When I first start running in the cold, my lungs feel like they are burning. Part of the burning feeling could also just be from working your lungs harder than usual. This winter my lungs aren't bothering me like they have in past winters. I think it may be because the other winters I am thinking of I had just had a baby so I was overweight, out of shape, and just starting in the winter. This time around I have been running since the spring, and I feel like it has made a difference. So, that didn't help much, but I don't know if your lungs will feel better or not. Thankfully winter doesn't last forever. I love running outside in the spring! And I definitely understand wanting to rent a treadmill for a few months. I generally run outside, but if I feel it is too dangerous, I just don't go. Then I wish I had a treadmill! Good luck!

I love the freedom of being able to go downstairs and run on my treadmill! Now if I would just quit spraining my dang ankle maybe I could get back on track with my fitness plan....

Good luck w/ that MPS. Way to go, BW!!!!! I'm totally there on the 4th. (That's the one you're running, right?) I think you'll notice a difference w/ your lungs by next week and I think a major difference in two weeks. It's takes awhile for our bodies to get in sync w/ our vision. You go girl!!!! Please keep us updated.
