Re: 'Raising The Bar' Yeah! I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
I have listened to the talk about 3 times and read through it once. I have so many thoughts running through my head and they're all going in different directions so this will, I hope, be a great discussion.
Being a mom of 5 boys, I am always concerned about how to prepare my boys for a mission. I feel like E. Perry's talk was a blue print for this very thing and he has answered a lot of my questions. (I couldn't help but liken his talk to anything I was doing in life, though.) Anyway, I had just had a conversation w/ my SIL about how someone she knew had just entered the MTC and came home six days later and was released from his mission with the opportunity to go back in six months for medical reasons. The medical reasons were mainly anxiety. As we were talking about this, fellow RM's in the room commented on how they could understand how that could happen and we started discussing how to prepare our children for not only the spiritual requirements that have to be met to go on a mission, but how to be mentally and emotionally ready to take on what is out there as well. It was an eye opening conversation for me and then 4 days later I just happened upon E. Perry's talk. Anyway, that is the reason for me wanting to discuss this.
One of the points that I loved that he covered in his talk was the ability to be social. He said that a lot of our youth have earphones in their ears or video controllers in their hands or they are texting or e-mailing people. Things that isolate them from society and also don't give them the opportunity to engage w/ people face to face and how this can hinder their confidence to share the gospel.
I don't have my Ensign here w/ me so I can't quote him word for word, but that is one of the ideas I really loved. And I just wanted to give a little background as to why I'm interested in discussing this.
I'll post more later. |
