Spring is almost here and I'm wondering what I should do to my grass to get it ready to look great for the summer.

hey sissy, is it too early to put it down now? I bought me a big bag 'o fertilizer the other day, but still had a little snow out back. Should I wait a couple of weeks? thx.

Yeah, put it down now for sure. But be prepared, it will be green long before anyone else's, which translates into mowing earlier.

So I guess this only works if you plant the grass first huh? However, Elder was out there today doing some prep work. It looks like grass sometime before the weather gets to warm. Yeah!

Yeah, having grass does help. Grass planting season is here if it needs to happen. for the next month or so, is the time.

what about aerating? We did it last year, do we need it again already? And I don't mind mowing. I also have 2 boys who can do it if I don't feel like it and their father forgets. What do you know about grass types? We've got lots of grass that greens up nicely in spring, but by mid summer dries out and looks terrible. I think we need to plant some more hardy grass in among the other grass to supplement for summer, but I'm not sure- I don't know what I'm doing... I just keep pluggin' away.

BW, I'm no expert on grass, but Kentucky blue grass is pretty good, but requires a lot of water, and with our last couple of dry winters, water isn't very plentiful. They have that new grass that requires about half the water, but I don't think you can get it in seed form. You have to buy it already grown. As far as it looking bad, you really need to fertilize about every 3 months to keep it looking good. However, if we have a hot dry summer again, fertilizing can kill your grass if it doesn't get enough water. Also a good thunderstorm will help with green grass because the thunder causes a chemical reaction in the water that creates Nitrogen which is what your grass LOVES and is the primary ingredient in fertilizer. Hope that helps.

Dia Minha, I would love to help out, what are you planning to do, sod, grow it yourself or hydro-seed. Let me know, I'll put my "old grubby" clothes on and what a joy to play in the dirt. How exciting. Then you and Matt can do cartwheels and roll around. Scott and I did when we got ours. Laundrygirl

I used Ironite and turfbuilder on my lawn and it made it look so green and thick. However, we didn't turn on our sprinklers early enough and the sun dried out our backyard. Now I am going to buy some more ironite and reapply to bring it back.... Anyone going to the gardening class on Thursday?? I am planning on it. I don't know if I can afford to get my yard ready this year but hopefully next. I need to plan out where to put everything. I have so many ideas. It's fun to think about how it will look. BTW - Mamallama I love your yard! I am so jelous right now
