I'm wanting to grow a garden of tomatoes around my front porch. What kinds are the best to plant and how many is too little and too much. What do I want to do w/ them you ask? I want to be able to eat them (we love BLT's and salads) and I wouldn't mind canning spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce or something. Maybe a little salsa???? That's really ambitious. Glad I'm not expecting a baby this year!!!! Woohoo, this summer is going to be so different than last summer. Nursing was such a nightmare last year. Okay, totally off subject, someone please open up their mind to my oh-so-non-experienced self.

Hello! I'm back in the world of the internet! Yahoo for me.
So I usually plant about 15 or more plants because I like to can them. For canning and sauces, I prefer Romas- they aren't the best slicers, though, so I always plant some Early Girl and Better Boy also. You can choose many different varieties, these are just what I've used over the years and liked best. You can also plant cherry tomatoes if your family likes to snack on them- mine don't. Last year from my 15-ish plants, I only canned about 21 quarts- I think. My memory is fuzzy, but we still have a couple of bottles. I wanted to do more, but it didn't happen before the frost in the fall. I've never made salsa, and I just make spaghetti sauce from the canned tomatoes (cook, smash, mix in some paste and tomato sauce and it's yummy.) I looked last year and couldn't find a tomato sauce recipe I liked, but I would also make that if I knew how.

This year, I'm running behind schedule and haven't planted anything yet... I hope it happens soon.

Good luck! I love fresh tomato BLTs, too. MMMMmmmmm....

This is great information. Thanks! I'll go w/ you to buy plants if you want. I heard that Deseret Peak IGA is a good place to go. You interested? When is it too late to plant tomato plants anyway?

mmm, nothing like a good old fashioned tomatoe sandwich. Add bacon and it's that much better, but I love fresh tomatoes regardless.
