Default Old bedroom furniture

I wanted any thoughts on things to do with my old wooden bedroom furniture. Well maybe it's not even real wood. Maybe it's that stuff that looks like wood but is really is covered with paper that looks like wood. Anyways I think its from the eighties(common theme in my life) and I would really like a change.

I have a very tight budget and was thinking of painting it or something. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't really know anything about refinishing or painting furniture (I wish I did!)

But if you can't figure out something then here's a great place to buy at a great price. Many items are used but if you are diligent in looking you will find something just for you. Go to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and visit thier classifieds.

Nice dresser!

Is the finish wood or veneer? Veneer is that plastic stuff they put over particle board to give furniture that wood-like look.

I have some bookcases in my LR that are veneer and I painted them black and then sanded them a little bit to give them that antique look. They turned out pretty good. I didn't put a finish coat on them but I wish that I had. If you let us know what look you're going for, then that will help us help you know what to do w/ your furniture.

Do you want to do anything else to the bedroom or only to the furniture?

Or you could skip the mess and just go directly to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

LnF those picture sizes are perfect.

Now I'm sure 5ftD will have some input since she's re-finished more then one of our dressers.

I was thinking black and maybe just getting new handles for the dresser some new silver ones that are more modern. The dresser has a mirror. Do you think it would look awful painted black? My furniture is not real wood it is
veneer so I would have to paint it. I have painted other older items in my house that are real wood with that crackle paint but I think I have overdone it.

I think if I am going to paint the furniture black I probably would want a new color on the walls. Any ideas what colors would look good with black bedroom furniture.

Depends on your fabric. Do you have curtains or a bedspread that determine that or is that down the road?

I have refinished a couple of dressers, you'd be surprised at what a new coat of paint and some new hardware can do for a piece of furniture. Yours would look great in black!! I painted our bedroom in a mocha brown and would love to have put some black furniture in there, but alas, my husband veteo'd the black furniture...too dark It still looks good with what we have in there. So anyway, that's what I have done

I'm painting my bathroom and bedroom and I've been told that a little sanding and paint would do the trick, black matches just about everything, that's what I'm planning with my bedroom, but it looks as if other people have answered your questions. Have fun!! laundrygirl

Trischcook, could you post pictures of your completed bedroom furniture? I would love to see how it turned out. Is your furniture real wood? Let me know. Thanks.

Laundrygirl - let us know how your projects turn out. I'd love to see the finished product.

LnF - I have brown melamine bookcases that I got at a garage sale that I painted black and then sanded them down to give them a rustic look. I don't have access to my digital camera this week but I'll get you a picture of them when I can or you can just come over and take a look at them when you're out and about.

A good primer would allow you to skip the sanding process Black would look awesome and new hardware on your dresser will make a huge difference. If you were feeling really brave and wanted a really different look you could pull out the power tools and cut some of the curves off of the headboard and bottom of the dresser.

Green in a bedroom is very relaxing. I don't know if you have any preference for green, but any of the lighter shades like a light sagey color would look great with black. Black is such a neutral it seems that you could get away with pretty much anything you like.

Great ideas. Thanks for the tips. Now I just need to find time to get going on this. Hey, 5d how is the kitchen painting coming? I hope you have found more time than I have to get some home projects done.

I just found the material I want so now I'll go to HD and match it to paint. I'm so excited! Probably this will be a project that happens over Spring Break.
