Default Night Time Coughing Remedy

This was forwarded to me in an email. I typically delete all such emails, but this one is very interesting. So being that we have this community of very cool people and some is bound to have a child with a cough I thought I would post this and see if anyone can either attest to it or give it a shot and report back on its validity or lack of.

I think I'll try this the next time I have a bad cough.
Quote:
It works 100% of the time although the scientists at the Canada Research council (who discovered it) aren't sure why.

To stop nighttime coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks Vaporub generously on the bottom of the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks.

Even persistent, heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief.

Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.

I heard the head of the Canada Research Council describe these findings on the part of their scientists when they were investigating the effectiveness and usage of prescription cough medicines in children as compared to alternative therapies like accupressure. Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good due to the chemical makeup of these strong drugs so, I listened.

It was a surprising finding and found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

An adult friend tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, ( incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough, and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used it.

So, if you have grandchildren, pass it on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed by the effect.

What do you have to lose?

That's really interesting. I may try that with my baby. She has been coughing. Thanks!

Let me know how it goes. I'm interested in finding out from someone who I know wouldn't embellish the story.

I just wanted to update you that I don't need to try the vicks anymore. My kids have been on amoxicillin for a few days and aren't coughing anymore. I do know that tricia has tried it.....

Just wanted to let you know my 5 year old daughter had a terrible cough yesterday and I tried the advise you gave and it seemed to help. I don't know how well it worked alone though because I gave her allergy medicine also. But she did sleep better than she had all week. So who knows for sure!

Very interesting. The cool part is it really can't hurt. Might smell, but it won't hurt.

Thanks SRG!

Alright, so this did NOT work for me. I've had a really bad cough that keeps me up most of the night so I remembered this post and tried it. Failed. Then again maybe nothing would have worked because I've also been trying sudafed and cough medicine as well and nothing is working. Very frustrating.

Teeny, sorry you are not feeling well. Coughs can be so misserable, because you can't even get the rest you need to feel better.

Have you had the cough for very long? My mom had a cough once that no medication seemed to help and after about a week she went to the doctor and he prescribed and inhaler. She took one treatment and didn't have any more problems.

We tried this on our 3 year old. I didn't notice a dramatic difference but there was one. He actually had a cold though, I'm not sure if that is a criteria for it's effectiveness. Sorry it didn't work for you, Teeny.

I would agree with the mixed results. Sometimes it seems to work better than others.
