I looked it up and read that you should subtract your age from 220 and it should be in the middle of that range. Anyway, I am not sure but maybe that will help. How often and far do you run?

I looked it up and read that you subtract your age from 220. It guess it is supposed to be somewhere in the middle of that range. I am not sure if that is right it is just what I read. So how often and far do you run? Do you run for pleasure or for exercise only?

"To calculate your target heartrate zone, subtract your age from 220. That's your Macimum Heart Rate. You'll want to keep your pulse between 50 and 75 percent of your MHR. Hitting at least 60 means you're having a good workout and is a reasonable goal. When you can reach 75 a few times a week, it tindicates you've achieved really peak condidtion. Anything below 50 is coasting."

Dr. Phil

General heartrate chart says target heartrate zone for someone age 30-35 would be 95-142 per minute.

Does this help?

Really good info! Okay, I haven't figured it out for a long time. If I remember right, I count how many bpm I get in 10 seconds and then multiply it by 10. Is that right?

PG, I'm training for a 5K right now and I'm in the beginning stages of it all so I'm not running very far. I'm just running about 20 minutes three times a week. It's a program called couch to 5K. This week it's kicking my rear! My legs really aren't very strong so I'm struggling this week. As soon as it warms up (enough for me) I will go running outside around the neighborhoods or up at the high school track but for now I'm in my basement on the treadmill.

Thumbs up Re: Heart rate

Thank you all for your help. Heart rate is an important part of exercising. A heart needs to pump enough blood to the muscles that are being used but not too much.

So the target heart rate is when you calculate 220 minus your age = maximum heart rate example: 220 - 30 = 190 and from that calculate 55% to 65% and you get you target heart rate zone.

This is important what Finnican has stated because if you are over the 65% you are working harder then you need to for optimal gains.

If you are under the 55% then you aren't working hard enough, and really are just coasting, and won't get, again, the optimal gains.
