Default Glasses

We just found out this week that our four year old daughter needs glasses. It makes me sad! I got glasses in 4th grade and the styles back then were a lot bigger. They weren't very flattering. I just picture her with huge glasses hiding her beautiful face. I realize the glasses will be smaller, but I'm not excited. Our daughter is extremely far sighted and one eye is so much weaker than the other. If we hadn't caught it now, she would have ended up with a lazy eye. When she gets her glasses she will have to wear an eye patch for a couple of hours a day. She is happy about getting glasses and even picked out a pink pair because that is her favorite color.

As I read what I wrote I realize it sounds really whiney, but I just needed to vent. I am thankful that the nurse caught it at her Kindergarten checkup. I am also thankful that she will be able to see after she uses the eye patch and with the help of her glasses. And of course I am happy that she is excited about wearing glasses. That sure makes things easier!

Yes it does. She will be so adorable in glasses! DS #2 just got some this week, too. I can't believe it. Actually I can as my eyesight is very poor. You didn't sound whiney at all. I'm glad you caught the weakness in her eye early on, too. My neice has a lazy eye and she finally got control of it in high school so I understand your concern.

My nephew is really far-sighted, too, and started wearing glasses before age 2. He looks so cute in them!

My DD got glasses just before 2nd grade, and my DS just got them a few months ago (he's in 5th). I, too, got big chunky plastic-frame glasses in 4th grade--Ugh! Glasses are so much smaller & cuter now. My son was actually excited to get them because it is "cool" to have glasses now, & he was amazed at what he could see with them on. I'm glad your daughter is excited about it. Her reaction to seeing better when she first puts them on will be precious!

I have been wondering what it will be like for her. I have no idea if she has had bad vision her whole life or just the past year or two. A few months ago my eyes were having a major allergic reaction to something in my contact solution. I had to use eye drops and couldn't wear my contacts for a week. I haven't bought new glasses for 14 years because I don't wear them very often, and the glasses are definitely not my prescription anymore. For that week I felt like I was almost blind. When I was finally able to wear my contacts again it was amazing! I could see faces and the mountains! This is what I picture happening with my daughter.

And thanks for your support. It helps to know that she won't be the only child wearing glasses.

RAR, the Cowan's oldest daughter had to get glasses, before starting kindergarten last year. They were saying it was very strange to her at first. She said it looked like the floor was too close and she had a hard time walking. They also said that she would get scared at first, because she could see so much more, like spiders and bugs. She must not have ever seen them before. It is very wonderful to think that through modern medicine she now can.

Good luck with it all. I bet she will love being able to see all these new and wonderful things.

How interesting! I am so thankful for modern medicine, too. Otherwise, I would be almost blind! I could list so many other things, but I'll stop there.
