| At our family reunion, my mother-in-law made ice cream. It was a lot of fun. Ingredients: 3/4 cup whole milk or flavored milk (we used plain, chocolate, and strawberry) 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Equipment: 2 (1 quart) zip-top bags 2 (1 gallon) zip-top bags 1 (8 pound) bag of ice, crushed or cubes (we didn't use this much) 1/2 cup rock salt newspaper heavy-duty packing tape The directions say to put all of the ingredients in a 1 quart bag. (We mixed the ingredients in a bowl first. I don't think it really matters what you do.) Squeeze out all of the air and seal the bag. (My mother-in-law put tape across the zip-top of the bag, because she said that salt got in the last time they made it.) Place this bag inside the other quart bag and seal. Place the double bagged ice cream mix inside a gallon zip top bag. Fill the gallon sized bag with ice, sprinkle the ice with rock salt and seal the bag. Then double-bag the gallon-size and seal. Wrap the filled bags in several layers of newspaper. Secure the newspaper by wrapping it with heavy-duty tape. Tape the package (it will be a box shape) on all sides so that it will hold its shape. (We then put it in a plastic grocery bag and taped that well, so it would be a little more durable.) Now toss the ice cream package back and forth for 15 to 20 minutes and when you unwrap the package, you should find homemade ice cream. We had about 15 of us standing in a circle. We had four packages. We thought of funny ways to toss them around the circle. It was a lot of fun, and we had the chance to be silly. This recipe makes about 3 cups, so most likely you will need to make more. It was really yummy! |

| We have done this before for FHE in single serving sizes where everyone got to make their own bag. This looks like alot more fun. I have also done it before with my preschool kids with reusable containers. Depending on how much your making you can put your ingredients in a plastic jar (like a peanut butter jar) and place it in a larger container, (like a 10lb canister from the cannery) and fill the space inbetween the two containers with your ice and rock salt. Then sit on the floor with a space between you and roll the can back in forth to each other for 15-20 minutes. It works best if the container with your ingredients has a screwed on lid. Otherwise it might pop of and you will loose your ice-cream. You will want to do this on a floor that will clean up easy or outside, because your outside lid might pop off. Unless you can find a large enough container with a screwed on lid or some other way to secure it. We just use a coffee can, or something similiar, and do it on the kitchen floor and never have had a problem with the lid popping off. Just beware it can. I haven't done this forever and throwing the bag around a circle sounds like something my kids would really enjoy. Hmmmmmm maybe our FHE treat for tomorrow needs to be home made ice-cream. Thanks for sharing RAR. Dia |
