All of us can relate to wanting a moment of peace and quiet. What methods have you tried to get that peace and quiet from the craziness around you? Which ones were successful?

That is a good question and one of my favorite hymns. The first thing that popped into my head was the temple- it's really the only place I feel complete peace. I wish I had a space of my own at home where I could create a peaceful atmosphere. Maybe in the future I'll work something out. I would love a place to escape- to not see the chores I need to do, or hear the kids bickering I hope others here have some good suggestions... I could use them too!

| Well, this is a toughie. Mostly because lately I "escape" rather than "find peace". And they're definitely not the same thing. But when I'm not HAVING to escape (as in: life is too stressful...let me outta here!), I find peace in a job well-done, in knowing that I've accomplished what I was supposed to accomplish, and I need to do nothing more. Peace isn't a location for me, but a state of mind. Peaceful moments can occur then at any time and any place of the day/house. I have to say that I haven't felt them as much lately because my list never seems able to get done. Clearly, I need to reduce my list (again) and look for peace in simpler accomplishments, because peace is always there, waiting to be a part of our lives. I think also that there is peace in HOPE. When I let myself rest in hope (see Psalms 16:8-9 and Moroni 7:40-41) I am at peace as well. Hope is also a mental state. If I had to pick a peaceful location (other than the Temple)...that'd be my FINISHED bedroom. My bedroom is NOT finished, but the way I imagine it is extremely peaceful. So sometimes, I just imagine it is finished and find peace there, when I'm there. hmmm, I guess that's a state of mind too...lol. 5D, thanks for this reminder and allowing me to think it out. | So, I guess I should weigh in on my own thread. (ha ha) Funny, I really don't have an answer to this, just thoughts. I have been thinking about where my mind is when I'm at peace so I'm thinking it's a state of mind kind of thing....but more than that, intentionally living for eternity - if that makes any sense. Even when the world around me is crazy I feel at peace when I am totally independent of all things of this world. When I am living my life in a way that connects me to things of an eternal nature I am at peace. So the temple is an obvious one, service, chatting w/ friends about eternal principles, pondering missionary work, singing hymns, etc. I feel so disconnected from that feeling when I start worrying about the bills, the basement, food storage, clothing, school, etc. Those things are necessary, yes, but if I become dependent upon them I loose that sense of peace and quiet I yearn for. When I address those issues based upon eternal principles I find that I'm centered again and that peaceful feeling returns. It's kind of like reading your scriptures because you have to check it off your list. That's no fun....but when you read because you're literally feasting on the Word, that's when true peace is experienced. This was probably a weird answer. Like I said, these are just mostly thoughts. |

5D, I love your thoughts! What a wonderful, concrete way to think about attaining peace in our lives. It so goes with that conversation we had yesterday. For those who weren't a part of it, it was regarding Sister Parkin's Oct 2003 Conf Talk about charity. She describes charity as a "circular love". The circle is we love Christ and He loves us. If we take ourselves out of that circle, the way back in is to refocus on loving Christ which is done with acts of patience, compassion, and understanding. What 5D describes is that very idea. Such great thoughts to think and hold on to! Thanks, 5D!

I thought of another peaceful "place" for me. I love the relaxation pose (flat on the floor totally relaxed) done at the end of yoga. I feel very connected to the spiritual world and completely unconnected to the physical world. It's a very peaceful feeling for me and I often pray during that time because I feel such connection.
