I'd like to start a forum on activities and ideas that can help to prep a soon-to-be kindergartener for the school experience. I've always taught my kids numbers and letters and shapes, but I'm wondering what other kinds of activities might be beneficial. I know there are some on this board who've taught pre-schools a lot. I found this good article on the subject ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ], but I hoped to get a lot of practical advice and specific activities from those who've been doing this well. What could we be doing over the summer before they go off to the big school for the first time? Thanks for your help!!

This sounds like a great thread! I do not know much about getting a kindergartner ready for school.

So today is the first day of the LAST summer before all of my kids will be in school. So I will have a kindergartener again in the Fall. Today we went to the library. Since we'll be going every week, I told the kids to just get ONE book. My kindergartener chose a book on paper crafts. It is a simple book, but SO fun! Today we made a mobile. You take two pieces of construction paper and fold them in half and cut out the same shape all 4 layers. He cut one and I cut one...scissor handling is a kindergarten skill. We did a fish, because that's what the book showed. Be sure to punch into the center of your shape so that you make a frame. Then you need two different colors of tissue paper (we only had white...and I dug that out of the gift wrap basket). Cut them the same size as the folded contruction paper and glue them between the two folded sides so you have framed tissue paper. Then cut in the middle, half way through the top of one frame and half way through the bottom of the other. Slide them together so you have an X. I hope that makes sense... Tape where you need to, add a paper clip to the top and a string to the paper clip and wah lah! A mobile that lets light through. It was about 20 minutes and my 5yo ds loved doing it. Tomorrow we're making dioramas with shoe boxes.

I believe the best way to prepare your child for kindergarten is to read to them. Read to them alot. I'm sure you already do a lot of that E. Last edited by Dia Minha; 06-04-2008 at 10:30 AM.
