Re: Romney Drops Out??? OK, you asked for it...here is my 2 cents (or $2) worth:
I was soooo sad & disappointed when I heard Romney dropped out, but not too surprised. He didn't want to put out any more if his own money if the chances for success were slim. He backed out in a classy way, saying it was "for the good of the party."
I've read up on it & is sounds like there was a lot of internal issues with some of his staff, like disagreements on where the emphasis should be both geographically & politically. I think things may have been a little different if his staff had been getting along. Maybe he shouldn't have tried to shift so far to the right after being semi-liberal in MA.
Also, I don't think they counted on Huckabee coming in & splitting the conservative vote. If Huckabee had stayed out of it, Romney would have done extremely well. All Huckabee has succeeded in doing is ensuring that McCain wins more delegates & the nomination. (To Huckabee supporters: I'm sorry, but I just don't like the guy.) In most debates & on-air comments, both Huckabee & McCain were very anti-Romney and anti-Mormon. It's like they felt threatened by him & had to attack him personally rather than sticking to the issues. I think Romney kept his composure well.
I heard a few people comment that they couldn't vote for Romney because he was "too perfect" (his family, morals, image), "too stiff" (because he didn't goof off like the others, and looked "too presidential". I don't know about you, but I'll take a president who's moral, serious when necessary, and stately than the alternative any day.
I have also heard MANY people say they'd rather vote Democrat than support McCain, especially if he chooses Huckabee as his running mate. I don't particularly like McCain, and I think he is too old (he'll be 72 if/when he takes office). However, for the sake of checks & balances, I don't think it's wise for one party to dominate both Congress (legislative branch) & the White House (executive branch). It wasn't good for the Republicans to have such free reign for much of the Bush administration, and it wouldn't be good for the Democrats to do likewise if Obama or Clinton is elected.
In all the elections I've seen, I've never been so torn re: who to vote for. I don't feel like I can really support any of the remaining candidates. It's sad. There is still so much anti-Mormon sentiment out there that maybe it's a good thing he didn't succeed this time. The country seems to be ready for a president who is female, black, old, or an ex-preacher, but not for one who is Mormon. Maybe in 4 years???
Thanks for letting me vent! Guess we'll have to wait & see what happens now. |
