Default Book: The End of Heaven

The End of Heaven is 5th in the "Great and Terrible" series by Chris Stewart.
These books are very LDS books about the end of days- beginning in the pre-existence in the first book called "The Brothers". I highly recommend starting at the beginning of the series.

In a nutshell, the books begin in the pre-existence, but jump ahead to the last days pretty quickly. By last days, I mean the beginning of the end for our country. Every time I read one of these books, it shakes me to the core and I get in a hurry to pack my basement with food and water. It's time to re-do our 72-hour kits as well, but these books inspire an urgency within me to really get more water stored up and as much food as we can. I don't want to give any spoilers, so suffice it to say there is an act of war on the US which leaves the country in chaos- without electricity and without means of government support. It is a frightening scenario, but told with love and compassion and faith and hope- he writes about angels and Christ and Satan and his minions in very matter-of-fact ways that ring true- there is a war going on around us already and it's starting to heat up. It's a fantastic story. There is a 6th book out now, too, I can't wait to pick it up!!

Hmm.... Are you saying this book is doctrinally based?

ummm, no. I didn't mean to say that at all- the author is LDS, so they are written from that point of view.

I suppose some plot points could be considered doctrinal-based, but I haven't mentally analyzed the books looking for that. I'm sure you could find doctrinal items in them, though... I never really thought about looking at the story from that angle- the books are fiction, so I read them as such.

I was just wondering because of your "shakes you to your core" comment. It sounded to me like you were reading this as counsel, thus the question.

I've heard a lot of people love this series. Every time I go to the library to check it out it's gone. (I probably don't have time to read it now anyway.) I had no idea there were that many volumes. You've peaked my interest!

Not exactly counsel, just a reminder- he's not an apostle or anything (although characters do reflect on the prophets' admonitions to store food and water), so I read these books as works of fiction, but whenever I read one I feel anxious about the future of our country and nervous about whether I have enough food and water stored up- that's all. Shaken, as in nervous or anxious...

Maybe if you read the books you'll see what I mean?

They sound interesting. I've been watching a couple of shows that are "apocalyptic" in nature and it really does make you think about your preparedness even though you know that how it all comes down will be very different from what they can imagine. However, I can't tell you the number of times lately that I've come across some new information from history (as in it really happened) and gone...wow that's the kind of thing that every body THINKS can't happen, but it did. All these apocalyptic shows don't feel so off the mark when you reflect on stuff like that. I know my food storage and water have been added to lately because of the events going on around us. Being better prepared is never a bad thing.
