| Title: The Holy Secret Author: James Ferrell Genre: Fiction / Spiritual "The Holy Secret" as a title is a play on words. There's no actual "secret" revealed. It's more the "secret" of being "holy", but that doesn't cover the ideas in the book very well. Like Bro. Ferrell's other book, The Peacegiver, this is a story of a person searching for answers and understanding with some somewhat difficult personal background. However, The Holy Secret spends a lot more time analyzing and discussing the scriptures than Peacegiver does and thus you come out with a invigorated understanding of ideas that have only been known on the surface before. The book is divided into 3 parts: scriptures, Sabbath, and Temple. In each part, the "teacher", Al, helps the "learner", Michael, to understand new things from the scriptures and to put together some ideas that Michael hadn't been able to internalize in the past. When I first started reading, I thought...well this is great stuff, but I know it already. Around page 40 or so...I stopped thinking that. This book goes deeply into our own thinking about where we are and helps us see that we have a LONG way to go, but that we ARE on the path and the way IS POSSIBLE. It bolstered my testimony without making me feel guilty for how far I need to travel still. It is an amazing book that I plan to read several times over, stopping every couple of chapters (they're short) to analyze and journal my feelings. This is a book that will help you improve who you are and who you can be. I would guess that readers under 20 or those very new to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints wouldn't get a lot out of it or it might not mean anything to them. While there's nothing bad in this book, it is a book for mature thinkers. I recommend it to all! I know others have read it and I would be curious to hear your thoughts as well. | I loved this book. Can I say that again? I loved this book!!!!! I loved it even more after discussing it w/ others because they helped me see things I hadn't seen while I was reading. I loved talking about the things that are so dear to my heart w/ others who feel so deeply about the same things. There is power in that! And besides, it was a great way to start out a Women's Conference Weekend. In fact, because we had the discussion before Women's Conference I was able to get more out of my classes as the book helped me go further into a subject. The thing I loved about this book is that it helped me dig deeper. I didn't need to expand my knowledge by learning other things. I expanded my knowledge by going deeper into the subjects I was already familiar with and becoming more familiar with the doctrine associated w/ them which inadvertently expanded my knowledge in an outward direction as well. So instead of knowing a little bit about everything I know a little more about one thing.....it's kind of like getting a degree rather than being a jack of all trades. Does this make sense? I just loved the new "doors" this book opened for me. It's kind of like getting glasses for the first time and being able to finally see all the leaves on the trees. They were always there, I just had never seen them because my vision wasn't as sharp as it needed to be. And for some things it will be like putting it under the microscope for the first time and seeing what isn't available to the naked eye. Fascinating! Can I say it again? I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!! | So, dds, was there any particular part that you found interesting in the book or that was your favorite? We had a book club on this earlier this year and I loved the insight everybody else brought to the table. I'd love to hear another perspective. |
