Default Book: Inkheart

Inkheart, by Corneila Funke, is being made into a movie, due out in January. It's about a man and his daughter and his strange ability-- when the man reads a book, the characters come to life- literally, entering our world and causing trouble- he doesn't know how to get them back into the book, and also when he reads someone out, someone or something goes into the book and he can't get them back out, either. It's a great story, that's just a taste of plot for you- I don't like to give too much away- there are two sequels out right now, although I've only read the second one.

My daughter checked out this book from the school library and so I borrowed because it had always sounded like an interesting premise. But I found the book on the dull side. It took almost a third of the way through to come to the interesting premise and before you get there you have a man and his daughter on the run for some unknown reason. I found it tiring to have SO many loose story lines with only minimal climaxes related to what seems like the main point. I quit reading about half way through and decided that she must have been getting paid by the word so she belabored every plot element. I also thought the evil character was a bit too evil for my taste but it wasn't until the middle of the book (which is about 700 pages long) that I could figure out why that should be. By then I was bored.

I loved the story idea behind Inkheart, but I didn't think it was well written.

My two oldest read it & loved it (and read the sequels). They'll want to see the movie, I'm sure. I haven't read it.
